November 2002 — Issue 2.5

November and True Thanksgiving

As we move through this month our theme is, of course, thanks. We will make the effort to look be thankful for the everyday thoughtfulness we encounter and will practice the wonderful habit of looking the person we are thanking right in the eye.

Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.
- Albert Einstein

We just wrapped up another Apple Event. Our thanks to those of you who attended, Bill Walton was an amazing speaker and PBS did an interview of him at the event. It was amazing to hear Bill speak so well and to hear him say that he was hardly able to put to words together because he stuttered so badly until he was 28. We opened with recognition of one of France’s employers who has given employment opportunities to many clients this past year. It was a great way to open the event. We will let you know when the PBS interview will air.

To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.
- Joseph Chilton Pearce

DMC Client Success Story

Kathy had recently completed her appraisal license and was looking for some on-the-job training. After much searching, I sent her resume and proposal letter to Greenlight Mortgage in Irvine. When Kathy followed up, she discovered that they had not received her resume. So, she did what she learned in job club – she made sure they got it – she delivered it in person! Greenlight must have noticed her motivation and determination because she was called for an interview the next day and was hired! Michele Kaplan, Kathy’s Rehabilitation Counselor helped explain WOTC and OJT to the employer, ensuring Kathy’s new position. Thanks for all your support!

DMC's Apple of our Eye Awards Event

The Dayle McIntosh Center’s 15th Annual Apple of our Eye Recognition Luncheon was held on October 24th at the Hyatt Regency in Garden Grove. Over 175 people from all over Orange County attended the event to help support DMC’s youth and children programs, to honor the award recipients, and to be inspired by keynote speaker, former NBA star, Bill Walton.

The event had a two-fold purpose: to raise funds for the Center’s children and youth services such as the Family and Children Together Program (FACT), and to recognize individuals and organizations who have impacted the lives of persons with disabilities in Orange County.

The FACT program supports families raising small children with disabilities by providing counseling, education, peer support, and playgroups. The Apple of our Eye Luncheon raised over $35,000 to support programs like FACT.

The Dayle McIntosh Center also presented recognition awards in five categories: Business, Community/Civic Service, Education, Youth, and the Ed Roberts Independent Living award. Over 40 worthy individuals and organizations were nominated in these categories.

The award recipients were:
Business – Microsoft Accessible Technologies, and Microsoft Diversity Group
Community/Civic Services – Creators of the Universal Design for New Homes program
Education – Cheryl Waters
Youth Leadership – Kevin Verdi
Ed Roberts Independent Living – John Box
A special recognition to RC Angelica Fernandez

Overall the event was a great success! Thanks to everyone who participated.

Vision is the gift to see what others only dream.
