Department of Rehabilitation Counselors

DR Newsletter
September 2002 — Issue 2.3

Back to School Time! The summer was great- the fish were biting, but now it’s back to school. Hope your vacation was refreshing.

The job fair was very well attended, it was nice to see some counselors visit and check it out. We had TV public service announcements on channel 4 and 9. Lots of people came. Thanks to the Job Developers and DMC staff for all their hard work, especially Manny and Dolores. One company alone did 8 hires.

DMC is busy with the Apple Event that is coming in a few weeks. Bill Walton is our speaker and he is going to share with us how he overcame a disability to become a sports commentator. Awards will be given out to employers and clients, and we have lots of Lakers items that have been donated for auction at this event.

Please schedule a tour of our Assistive Technology lab with our new AT coordinator, Girmay Micael. The lab has gotten very busy and we are making new plans for changes.

Our employment support group JAG, was something that we had long wanted to do as we felt that it was so important but attendance has not caught on and I am suspending this service. Transportation continues to be a major problem and though we tried to be convenient with two different locations it just did not work out.

The Voc Services team will be reviewing each and every open case we have and working as a team to move the cases along in the right direction. Feedback from this staffing will be shared with you through our case notes.

If you need information on any client please call your job developer and let them know.

DMC Job Fair was a great success!

Our first annual job fair at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Garden Grove on Thursday, August 22nd, 2002 was a huge success. Thank you for spreading the word and encouraging your clients to attend. 25 companies and an estimated 1000 job seekers attended the event which was written about in Friday’s Orange County Register Business Section, and advertised beforehand on Channel 4 and Channel 9 television.

One employer told us that this was the best job fair they had ever attended and that they had met the best applicants they had ever seen! Some said it was the most accessible job fair they’d ever seen. When asked what they liked the best, one said “the diversity of [the] applicants and their professions”. Another said it was the “diverse range of individuals”. Employers complimented not only the service of the staff and volunteers at the job fair but also the professionalism and friendliness of our clients, the job seekers.

One employer hired 8 individuals on the spot! Other employers are still following up with the job seekers and will keep us up to date on hires resulting from this job fair.

We look forward to putting on more events like this in the future and look forward to sharing these successes with you.

DMC Services for the Deaf

The DMC Job Fair had 3 sign language interpreters in attendance to assist the deaf and individuals with hearing impairments in communicating with the recruiters. By having these interpreters available, we increased the ability of these deaf applicants to find employment. We are proud to have hosted what one applicant called “the first accessible job fair ever.”

The Services for the Deaf Department oversees the provision of Sign language interpreting services. Interpreting services are normally provided to agencies, schools, facilities and businesses by making a request three or more days in advance. To request these services call (714) 621-3300 ext. 3041. In addition, Dayle McIntosh Center operates the COMMEND program, a specialized interpreting service provided on a 24 hour/seven day a week basis for medical and law enforcement emergencies. The COMMEND interpreters are top flight interpreters, not only highly skilled professionals but compassionate souls willing to respond to an emergency situation at 2:00 A.M. COMMEND is reached by calling 1-800-422-7444. As part of the services provided to insure accessibility for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals, this department also provides in-service training to hospitals on how to better serve deaf people.
