Aging with Vision Loss Program

Picture of Jane with Guide dogA separate component of independent living skills training is the Aging with Vision Loss Program targeted to individuals,
who are fifty-five years of age and older, and who are experiencing significant vision loss as part of the aging process. Specialized assistance is provided in areas such as use of public transportation, orientation to the home and immediate community, white cane travel, Braille, microwave cooking,
and use of visual aids and adaptive devices. This one-on-one assistance is provided in the homes of consumers.

The Aging with Vision Loss Program (AVL), funded through a federal grant, has been providing a host of comprehensive independent living services to seniors with vision loss since 1996. Because of its growth and success, the AVL program is now proudly serving Orange County, San Gabriel / Pomona Valley areas and the Southern Coastal Region of Los Angeles. All services are delivered FREE of charge and are designed to meet the individual’s needs and situation. Every consumer receives a personal in-home visit so that specific needs and services can be identified. The desired outcome is to provide support which results in an increased level of independence and self-reliance.

The AVL Team is available for presentations to the community regarding the AVL program and other DMC services.
